Classes at the Jahiz Institute

How do classes work?

Our courses are taught online via Zoom in real-time. Recordings of the classes will be available for download for students who have to miss a session, but ultimately, classes are taught in an interactive manner and students will get the most benefit by attending them live.

Upon registering for a course, students will receive a welcome email with a full orientation.

What’s the time commitment if I sign up for a class at the Jahiz Institute?

Our courses are designed to be as light or as intensive as you want them to be.

If all you can do is attend the weekly session, you will still get some benefit from the course. However, most courses will assign about 2 to 3 hours of reading for completion during the week.

What language are classes taught in?

The Jahiz Institute offers a mix of classes for various levels and language backgrounds.

Some courses are taught entirely in English, with a supplemental section for students who would like to look at the texts discussed in their original Arabic, Persian, Turkish, etc.

Other courses are of the classic “sight reading” variety, where students will read a text in the original language with the instructor, while translating them on sight into English. The text of course will be in Arabic/Persian/Turkish, but discussion and analysis of the text will be in English.

Finally, for students who would like to develop their reading, listening and speaking skills in tandem, some courses will be taught entirely in the target language.

Do I need to purchase course materials?

No. All course materials will be provided by the course instructor.

Are classes recorded?

Classes are recorded for the benefit of students who have to miss a session or who have a scheduling conflict. However, all recordings will be deleted after the course ends and they will not be made publicly available.

It is possible that some video excerpts featuring the course instructors will be re-used for promotional materials, but student images or voices will never be used without their consent.

Scheduling, Payment, and Refunds

What time do classes meet?

It varies. Some courses meet at the same time every week. Other classes will be scheduled in coordination between the instructor and interested students.

I have a weird schedule / The course times don’t work for me. Can you accommodate me?

Yes!

Our courses are recorded for students who are not able to attend them live.

We also offer Reading Circles and Private Tutorials that can be scheduled at the convenience of interested students.

Finally, feel free to reach out through our Contact page if you have a question about particular scheduling requirements.

What is your refund policy?

All of our classes come with a satisfaction guarantee. If after your first lesson, you’re not satisfied or if it’s not what you were looking for, just let us know and we’ll be happy to give you a full refund.

After the second class or third class, refunds are available on a pro rata basis. We are not able to provide a refund after the fourth class.
