Arabic through Music - Jahiz Institute

Arabic through Music:

An Intermediate Arabic Course

Course Description

Do you love listening to Arabic music but don’t understand a single word besides “habibi”? Are you an Arabic student that always studies with a playlist of your favorite Arabic songs playing in the background? Well, here’s your chance to finally see what these lyrics are saying and take your Arabic to the next level at the same time!

In this course “Arabic through Music,” we will guide intermediate Arabic students through the lyrics of some of the most classic songs of the Arabic language. Song selections will include songs in both Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial dialects (Egyptian, Levantine) and will be carefully curated for intermediate level students. Songs in dialect will not have strong dialect features and will be accessible to students to have not studied an Arabic dialect before.

We will study songs by artists such as:

  • Fairouz
  • Umm Kulthoum
  • Abdel Halim Hafez
  • Amr Diab
  • Nancy Ajram
  • And other contemporary artists

Students will also have the opportunity to suggest songs that they would like to study.

The course is taught in English and we will be examining the song lyrics in both the original Arabic and in English translation. And we will of course be listening to the songs as well! (Singing along is optional).
